Everything 2000 Lists All Millennium Trademarks; 500 Days to 2000 is August 19

DATELINE: SEATTLE

Aug.18, 1998--Everything 2000, recognized as the comprehensive source of millennium news and information, is now listing all current millennium trademarks on its web site http://www.everything2000.com

As January 1, 2000 approaches, more and more companies are interested in using brand names, slogans, and other trademarks incorporating the word "MILLENNIUM" and related terms. Currently, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has more than 3,500 pending applications and registrations for marks containing millennial and year 2000 related words. The result is near-gridlock, as many are seeking to register identical or similar MILLENNIUM marks.

Everything 2000 will now include an exhaustive list of trademarks containing the word "MILLENNIUM". This information was compiled by Dechert Price & Rhoads, the law firm whose well-known Annual Report on Trends in Brand Name Selection has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, CNN and National Public Radio.

Glenn Gundersen, a trademark law partner in Dechert's Philadelphia office and author of the book Trademark Searching, reports that interest in "MILLENNIUM" marks began nearly a decade ago and has intensified each year since. 1998 applications are being filed at the fastest pace ever. "In the first four months of 1998, nearly 300 applications were filed for new marks containing variations on the word 'millennium'," notes Mr. Gundersen. "The word is now more popular than '2000', which appears in approximately 275 applications so far."

Dozens of companies have filed applications claiming the 'Official' product or service of the millennium. Everything 2000 now includes a list of filings for the "Official Candy", the "Official Beer", the "Official Binocular", the "Official Light Bulb", the "Official Vending Machine" of the Millennium, and many more.

"There is no official U.S. organization similar to an Olympic organizing committee or Bicentennial commission to oversee millennium activities or marketing. The significant milestones of year 2000 and a new millennium are being self-governed by capitalism, activism, and trademarks," says John Locher, founder and publisher of Everything 2000.

The MILLENNIUM has become extremely popular as a brand name and company name, accounting for hundreds of marks appearing in Everything 2000's list. "The word 'Millennium' has come from nowhere to become one of the most frequently sought trademarks," observes Mr. Gundersen. "While it may be possible for hundreds of companies to each claim trademark rights in variations on 'Millennium' or '2000' in their categories, it's a very crowded field. Naming a product or business 'Millennium' will not help you stand out from the crowd, and in many categories may simply be unavailable."

The following chart shows growth in the popularity of these terms as measured by new trademark filings. -0-
